My name is Chuks the General, am a standup comedian, master of ceremony and I practically talk for a living. Comedy is a very wonderful one and I like the fact that we are moving from one phase to another, Nigerian entertainment industry wasn’t like this the first time we started, even when people like us started it wasn’t like this, but I will say it has moved into what I call metamorphosis from one phase to another. At first it was in a place where it doesn’t have plenty value, you want to do comedy people will be angry with you, you should go and do medicine and surgery, be a lawyer, but now entertainment has really appreciated it, I believe there are three phases of talent, I went through this phases gradually one at a time, they are:
- To discover
- To Develop
- To display
I want to advise people out there that there are needs to go through these phases, don’t be in a hurry to get to the point of display. Am one of those who discovered their selves unconsciously. I did quiz and debate in school when I was in secondary school, so we had this particular quiz in school, we were supposed to get 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions and we will get to local government level, and I was third position, we got to local government level and I was still third position and when we got to the state level to represent our local government they changed the rules that they needed only first and second position, so we that came third we were not useful and we just sat down and at the quiz my school came 7th position and after the quiz the organizers were like since every local government brought their third positions lets have them around and do their thing.
Before now I was answering Chuks as a stage name I had a wedding I was to anchor many years ago in Asaba Delta State, so when I got to the event the Chairman of the event who was a military man a Colonel was like who is the MC of the event and I told him I was the one and he was like “Me? This guy? And he said he was going to leave soon before the wedding comes to an end, so I started doing my event and it was a wow moment, jokes were coming from here and there and all angles and it was spectacular and the chairman who was meant to leave in 30 minutes was there all through the event and when he wanted to do closing remark he said “the man who just hosted this event is a General in his own field” saying I was going to top my world my game”. As I was going home I was like “this thing make sense oo General “Chuks the General” and I was like we have a name now” and that’s how the name Chuks the General came to being.
So we all came and they told us that we have two minutes each to do anything we like, some people came, some were doing poems, some were dancing, speaking English, and in my mind I was like I can make these guys to laugh, so I got to the stage attempting to do a poem I started making them to laugh, and they were really laughing. For two minutes I was on top gear and the humor was high. At the end me that they brought to do a spontaneous thing came first position and that was the only thing my school came back with. After that day, the principal announced at the morning assembly the results of the competition ad that I came first position in comedy and everyone jubilated and that was how I became the comedian of the school.
At the university I kept asking myself what I wanted to do because in my family my dad wanted me to be a doctor, as the first son of the family though I was doing statistics which increased my thinking skills and God helped me to come up with things on the spot, and I was still doing comedy as well in the university that I became the SUG Director of Sports in Nasarawa State University Keffi, I was loved in school it became interesting. It was from there I started entering Abuja gradually to do comedy, host events, and I started being appreciated, and I could now pay my bills in school from doing events. After school while I was waiting for job I kept pushing still hosting events and shows, one year, two years and it got to a point people now told me can I employ them, and I was like “Oh am not looking for job again, people are now meeting me to get jobs, so this is job” so I decided to professionalize on the job, went through trainings, read books, look up to people who were ahead of me, got mentors, prayed about it, studied the word of God and became great in what I do and that was how I started growing from one phase to another.
My real name is Israel Chukwunyem so the “Chukwunyem” brought out the “CHUKS” and I believe that one day I will be a general in my field.
Am from Ikeano East local government area of Delta State and I was born February 27th 1988. Am a graduate of Statistics (Bsc) from Nasarawa State University, Keffi. I do Media Consulting in advertising. I have acquired more skills in Journalism, Broadcasting, Stage acting, Stage Drama. I equally do strictly comedy programme on Wazobia FM Abuja.
One of the challenges we face is getting people to believe you, So my first phase of challenge was lack of belief, no one believed me, so the best way to conquer that is to be known, so make them to know you, because I had to go to events, shows make people laugh call my name well for them to hear. Another aspect is getting sponsors and finance to sponsor your events, so getting sponsors was another thing I had to face and fought for and we kicked up and got more sponsors who believed in you like www.eventsforest.com came to us now and that’s how our growth keeps growing.
I had different mentors when I was passing through my three phases and will categorize them on their roles and fields they played and are still playing in my career. For example
For packaging and making people to buy into it, I respect AY a lot because he has different ways of packaging well and you will buy it that you won’t even know when you will pay.
For stage delivery I respect Gordons and I go dye, I look up to them that why my voice is on top like theirs. I have to force the laughter into you, I can’t be cracking comedy in an event and you’re serving food without laughing.
For maturity, respect and carrying people who are following you along Ali Baba is who I look up to.
For push Seyi Law is who I look up to who will push you to the drive of being where you want to be.
So I actually aspire to be all these people in one person.
I have actually moved from heights to greater heights and have been doing a yearly event called Generally Speaking and this year is the third edition coming up 11th of March 2018 at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja. This year is going to be superb because am coming up with a stage drama then come up with movie. Watch out for comedy forest that will always make you laugh all the time.
My advice top coming comedians is to develop their talents as all of us are in a raw files before we develop them, so you have to develop it, don’t share it raw to people. Nigerian Government should equally support us and allow us bring great dreams to reality. Thanks to events forest for being part of my dream, May God bless you all. Thanks.
